The Federal Government of Nigeria has official declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday to observe this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The announcement was made on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in an official press statement released on Friday, August 21, 2026, in Abuja. The statement was signed and issued through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm congratulations to the Muslim Ummah across the nation and in the diaspora. He urged citizens to use the solemn occasion to reflect deeply on the values, virtues, and teachings exemplified by Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, tolerance, humility, and dedication to public service.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility, and service to others,” the Minister stated. “These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The Minister further called on citizens of all faiths to utilize the holiday to pray for continuous peace, stability, and national cohesion. Emphasizing that national unity remains a shared responsibility, he advised the public to mark the celebrations with mutual respect and restraint.
Reaffirming the current administration’s commitment, Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured all Nigerians that security agencies remain steadfast in safeguarding lives and property, as well as preserving peace across all states during and after the public holiday period.
