​The United States government has issued a scathing condemnation following a midnight massacre in Plateau State, Nigeria, urging authorities to bolster defenses for targeted Christian farming communities.
The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs issued a formal statement on Wednesday, 19 August, strongly condemning an overnight massacre in Plateau State, Nigeria, which left dozens of residents dead many ambushed in their sleep.
​The assault targeted rural residential settlements in the Mangu Local Government Area of central Nigeria. According to survivor accounts and local civic organizations, including the Christian Emergency Alliance, heavily armed assailants stormed the village during the late hours, opening fire and torching residential structures while families were asleep in their homes.
In an official statement, diplomatic representatives called the violence a “horrific atrocity” and urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to hold perpetrators accountable while taking immediate measures to safeguard vulnerable Christian communities across the Middle Belt.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration, state officials released a statement characterizing the attack as “deeply disturbing”. The administration assured residents that security forces are actively investigating the assault, reiterating that residential safety remains the state’s highest priority while pleading with local youths against reprisal attacks.
​The massacre comes amid heightened diplomatic scrutiny over Nigeria’s internal security. Washington lawmakers have repeatedly raised alarms over persistent violence in central Nigeria, where ethnic, land, and religious disputes continue to claim thousands of innocent lives annually.
​Human rights advocates and regional community leaders have repeatedly called for increased military presence, intelligence gathering, and specialized surveillance around agricultural corridors in Plateau and neighboring Benue State to prevent further loss of life.
As of Wednesday evening, search and recovery efforts in the impacted villages remain ongoing, with security forces deployed to stabilize the region.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration condemned the continuous violence, calling the security breach unacceptable. State authorities deployed additional joint security forces to Mangu Local Government Area and surrounding corridors to restore calm, while appealing to residents to refrain from reprisal attacks.
Security agencies announced ongoing tactical operations in affected rural settlements to track down the fleeing assailants, stating that reinforcements have been stationed in vulnerable border communities.
