The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commenced the demolition of buildings obstructing waterways in Maitama, Abuja, as part of efforts to address flooding and restore natural drainage channels.

The demolition exercise, which began in the Maitama District, targets structures allegedly constructed on waterways and drainage corridors. The FCT Administration said the action was necessary to prevent further obstruction of water channels and reduce the risk of flooding in the capital.

Wike said the government would not allow individuals or developers to build on waterways, stressing that such structures could endanger residents and worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.

The minister directed relevant agencies of the FCT Administration to identify and remove structures obstructing waterways across the territory. He also warned property owners and developers against violating approved building plans and environmental regulations.

The FCT Administration said the demolition was part of broader measures to improve drainage infrastructure, protect communities and ensure proper urban planning in Abuja. It urged residents to comply with development regulations and avoid constructing on designated waterways.
