At least 20 people have been confirmed dead following a fresh outbreak of violent clashes between rival local groups in the Kokoli community of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.
​The deadly confrontation reportedly began around 5:30 AM on Friday, August 14, 2026, when long-standing tensions between the rival factions escalated into open, armed conflict along the central market road and surrounding residential sectors in Kokoli.
​Witnesses stated that the unrest broke out abruptly during early morning activities, with gunfire and local weaponry causing mass panic. Residents fled into nearby bushland and neighboring settlements for safety as homes, shops, and vehicles were set ablaze during the melee.
​Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that security teams were dispatched promptly upon receiving distress calls:
​”The Command received reports of a violent disruption of peace in Kokoli community, Borgu LGA, involving opposing local groups. Tactical units, alongside joint security personnel, were immediately deployed to the venue at approximately 7:15 AM to restore order, restore calm, and prevent further escalation. Over 20 fatalities have been recorded so far, and an investigation into the root cause of the violence is actively underway.”
​Commenting on behalf of the state government, the Chief Press Secretary to the Niger State Governor, Bologi Ibrahim, expressed deep concern over the loss of lives:
​”Governor Mohammed Umar Bago strongly condemns the tragic violence in Kokoli, Borgu LGA. The state government extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Clear directives have been issued to security agencies to apprehend all perpetrators and ensure law and order are maintained throughout the council area.”
​As of Saturday morning, joint security forces—comprising police personnel and military detachments, maintain a heavy presence across the Kokoli community to maintain a fragile peace.
​Local authorities and community leaders have appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid reprisal attacks and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
