WHAT HAPPENED TO MARY HABILA?
About a month ago, Nigerians were confronted with the disturbing report of the death of Mary Habila, reportedly a personal nurse to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, at the minister’s country home.
Reports surrounding her death raised serious questions. Her body was reportedly found naked and bearing bruises, circumstances that understandably generated concerns about the possibility of foul play.
Yet, barely weeks later, the public conversation appears to have gone silent.
Why?
Why have the Nigerian Police, journalists, civil-rights activists, women’s organisations and other institutions that should ordinarily demand answers seemingly moved on?
A human life has been lost under circumstances that demand clarity. Nigerians deserve answers to some basic but critical questions:
* What did the autopsy reveal?
* What progress has the police investigation made?
* Has anyone been questioned, arrested or held accountable?
* Has the investigation been concluded—or has the case simply gone quiet?
* Has Mary Habila been buried, and if so, under what circumstances?
* Why has the public not been adequately briefed about the circumstances of her death?
These are not questions of politics. They are questions of human dignity, justice and the value we place on life.
In a society that truly values human life, a death occurring under suspicious circumstances should never be allowed to disappear from public consciousness merely because the headlines have moved on. Investigations must be thorough, transparent and pursued to their logical conclusion, regardless of the status or influence of anyone who may be connected to the circumstances.
Every life matters.
Mary Habila was someone’s daughter, someone’s sister, someone’s friend and, above all, a human being whose life had value.
Nigerians deserve transparency. And justice demands that questions surrounding her death are not buried alongside her.
Let us not become a society where outrage lasts only as long as a trending story.
Let us not allow another Nigerian life to become just another forgotten headline.
We must continue to ask. We must continue to demand answers.
WHAT HAPPENED TO MARY HABILA ON THAT FATEFUL NIGHT?
Until that question is answered satisfactorily, Nigerians must not forget.
