​Families living in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are facing severe financial strain as rapidly escalating residential rents compel households to cut back on essential living expenses, including food, healthcare, and education.
​Residents in suburban satellite towns such as Kubwa, in the Bwari Area Council, report that residential accommodation costs have nearly doubled over the past 12 months without corresponding improvements to housing facilities or public infrastructure.
The steep rent hikes have significantly reduced disposable household incomes, forcing families to redirect a dominant portion of their monthly earnings strictly toward keeping a roof over their heads.
​To cope with the financial pressure, several affected tenants disclosed that they have been forced to adopt drastic adjustments. Families report buying cheaper, lower-quality food items and occasionally skipping meals, while others have transferred their children to lower-cost schools or abandoned emergency savings plans altogether.
Others noted that moving to cheaper, more distant suburbs is no longer a viable solution due to the offsetting costs of daily transportation to the city centre.
​Community members and civil society advocates are calling on federal and FCT administrative authorities to intervene urgently in the worsening housing crisis.
Demands include the implementation of rent stabilization frameworks, stronger regulation of estate agent fees, and expanded public investment in genuinely affordable housing schemes for low- and middle-income earners across the nation’s capital.
