​The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for the public submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation by eight days. Originally scheduled to close on Thursday, 13 August 2026, the submission window will now remain open until 5:00 p.m. West Africa Time on Friday, 21 August 2026.
​In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the extension is intended to allow individuals, civil society groups, legal practitioners, security experts, and public institutions additional time to prepare well-considered contributions.
The working group emphasised that broad public consultation is essential to developing a comprehensive operational and administrative framework for the country’s proposed state policing model.
​The proposed National Policing Bill seeks to overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture by providing the legal, operational, and financial frameworks necessary to establish state police services alongside the federal police.
Critical areas under review in the public submissions include sustainable funding models, command and control structures, inter-agency coordination, and statutory safeguards against political interference or abuse.
​The working group reiterated that all submissions must be uploaded exclusively through the official National Policing Bill portal before the revised deadline. Upon conclusion of the public consultation period, the panel will compile and present a final draft of the bill for formal legislative processing by the National Assembly.
