Human rights watchdog Amnesty International Nigeria has called on security agencies and federal authorities to hold Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi accountable for alleged incitement and reckless statements.
The organisation expressed serious concern over viral audio-visual footage in which the lawmaker reportedly made inflammatory remarks ahead of local political activities in Osun State. According to Amnesty International, the lawmaker’s comments, which reportedly encouraged violence against political opponents posed a direct threat to public safety, democratic freedoms, and the rule of law.
The rights group stressed that public officials and elected representatives must be held to higher standards of restraint and ethical conduct rather than using their platforms to incite hostility.In its statement, Amnesty International urged the Nigeria Police Force and relevant security bodies to conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation into the matter.
The advocacy group emphasized that failure to address political incitement fosters a culture of impunity, leaving voters and opposition figures vulnerable to politically motivated harassment and violence.The demand follows widespread public outrage and calls from political stakeholders demanding regulatory and legal intervention.
Security agencies have been urged to ensure that political figures involved in hate speech or threats of violence face appropriate legal scrutiny, regardless of their political standing or legislative immunity.
Senator Fadahunsi has reportedly denied inciting violence, maintaining that his statements were misinterpreted.
However, civil society organisations continue to push for formal accountability to safeguard peace and security ahead of upcoming electoral processes in the region.
