​The diplomatic advisory follows the U.S. Department of State’s continent-wide policy restructuring, which took effect at 12:01 a.m. EST on August 1, 2026. Under this policy, routine nonimmigrant and immigrant visa adjudications across 25 diplomatic missions in Sub-Saharan Africa were centralized into designated regional hubs.
As part of this transition, routine visa processing handled at the U.S. Embassy on Diplomatic Drive, Abuja, was transferred to the U.S. Consulate General on Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos.
U.S. Mission officials emphasized that transferring routine visa processing does not signal the closure or administrative reduction of the embassy in Abuja. The U.S. retains bilateral governance, trade relations, and political engagement with the Nigerian Federal Government.
They maintain essential American Citizen Services (ACS), including emergency assistance and passport renewals for U.S. nationals and special diplomatic and official visa processing, along with urgent consular cases on a discretionary basis.
All routine B1/B2 tourist, business, student (F-1/M-1), work (H-1B), and family-based immigrant visa applicants must now register, submit payments, and attend interviews at the Lagos Consulate General.
Applicants who held routine interview dates in Abuja scheduled after the August 1 transition deadline are receiving direct communications from the U.S. Department of State regarding appointment transfers to the Lagos processing center.
Currently held, unexpired U.S. visas remain completely valid and do not require re-issuance or endorsement due to the administrative changes.
Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fees previously paid for appointments at the Abuja embassy remain recognized and valid for rebooking at the designated Lagos regional hub, subject to standard U.S. consular guidelines.
