Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin, has alleged that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force subjected him to humiliating treatment, forcing him to strip down to his undergarments following his arrest over the weekend.
​Speaking on Sunday, August 9, 2026, shortly after his release from nearly 24 hours in police custody, Adejoorin disclosed that officers at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo ordered him to strip off his trousers, singlet, underwear, shoes, socks, and belt upon his arrival at the facility.
​The commissioner’s detention stemmed from a violent incident that occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the Isokun area of Ilesa. A shooting broke out near a street rally organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving at least three people injured, including a 14-year-old boy, Tobi Ilesanmi.
​Addressing reporters on Saturday evening, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that tactical officers from the Force Intelligence Department (IRT) intercepted a white Lexus 350 carrying an operative of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, alongside Adejoorin.
​According to Ojelabi, witnesses alleged that individuals operating from a vehicle bearing official registration number OSHAO4 opened fire near the APC gathering before fleeing the scene. Police intercepted the Lexus shortly after and brought both occupants to the command headquarters for questioning.
​Adejoorin’s arrest ignited a fierce political row in the state, coming just days ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
​Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Saturday, Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council (the campaign organization supporting Governor Ademola Adeleke’s reelection platform), condemned the police’s actions, describing the commissioner’s interception as a “bandit-like abduction carried out under the cover of police authority.”
​Olajengbesi accused the Osun State Police Command, under Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, of partisan bias and called on Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to urgently intervene to prevent security agencies from being weaponized against political figures.
​”You may arrest our leaders, but you cannot arrest the will of the people,” Olajengbesi stated, demanding an immediate investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
​While Commissioner Adejoorin maintains that he was merely passing through the area and had no involvement in the violence, police authorities emphasized that the detention was part of ongoing investigations into illegal firearm discharge and civil disturbance in Ijesaland.
​The Osun State Police Command has yet to issue an official response regarding the commissioner’s specific claims of mistreatment while in detention at the SCID.
