Thirteen residents of Efeyi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue were on Friday laid to rest in a mass burial following a deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen on July 24,2026. The victims were killed during the attack on the community, which left residents mourning and heightened concerns over the safety of rural communities in the area.
Community leaders and local officials who attended the burial called for increased security presence across Benue to prevent further attacks and protect residents. They urged security agencies to intensify surveillance and respond promptly to threats, particularly in vulnerable rural communities.
The leaders said the continued attacks had created fear among residents and disrupted normal economic and social activities in affected communities. They appealed to the government to strengthen security measures and ensure that those responsible for the attack were identified and brought to justice.
The community also called for greater protection for farmers and other residents whose livelihoods depend on access to their farms and surrounding areas. The mass burial provided an opportunity for relatives, friends and community members to mourn the victims and demand urgent action to prevent a recurrence.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Benue has continued to face security challenges involving attacks on rural communities, with stakeholders repeatedly calling for stronger measures to protect lives and property.
