A former lawmaker has cautioned political actors and youths in Osun against actions capable of triggering violence as tensions rise ahead of the state’s governorship election.
The former lawmaker issued the warning amid reports of politically motivated cult-related violence and heightened security measures in the state ahead of the election.
He urged political parties, candidates, supporters and youths to avoid inflammatory statements and actions that could threaten peace and undermine the electoral process.
The former lawmaker said political differences should not be allowed to degenerate into violence, stressing that the safety of residents and the credibility of the election should remain a collective responsibility. He also called on young people to resist being used by politicians to cause violence or disrupt electoral activities.
The warning comes against the backdrop of increased security preparations in Osun, including recent police reassignments as authorities intensify measures ahead of the governorship poll.
The former lawmaker urged security agencies to remain professional, impartial and firm in dealing with individuals or groups attempting to disrupt public peace. He also appealed to political parties and their supporters to resolve disagreements through lawful channels and respect the outcome of the electoral process.
He stressed that violence during elections could have long-term consequences for communities, businesses and the state’s development. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities while encouraging political actors to prioritise peace and issue based campaigns.
