​The Osun State Police Command has arrested the State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, following a violent shooting incident that disrupted an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ilesa on Saturday.
​The altercation occurred around 2:30 PM on Saturday near Ereja Square, Ilesa, where members of the opposition APC had gathered for a scheduled ward-level mobilization rally.
​According to eyewitnesses, political thugs allegedly accompanied by high-ranking officials stormed the venue, leading to chaos as gunfire erupted. The shooting dispersed attendees and left several individuals injured.
​Confirming the arrest, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Yemisi Opalola, stated that the commissioner was taken into custody to facilitate ongoing investigations into the violence and illegal discharge of firearms.
​”The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Mayowa Adejoorin, is currently in police custody assisting detectives with investigation into the gunshot incident during the APC rally in Ilesa. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for political violence in Osun State, and anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.” SP Yemisi Opalola disclosed.
​Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the APC in Osun State, Tajudeen Lawal, condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition political parties in the state. He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation to ensure justice is served.
​In response, the Director of Media and Strategy for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Oladele Oluwabamiji, denied allegations that the commissioner coordinated the attack, describing the arrest as a political setup and urging the police to remain neutral.
Additional tactical police units have been stationed across key areas in Ilesa to prevent reprisal attacks. Hon. Adejoorin remains in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo as preliminary investigations continue.
