The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation aimed at modernising Nigeria’s electricity sector and improving the reliability of power supply.
The partnership was discussed when Canada’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, James Christoff, visited NISO in Abuja. The engagement focused on power-sector reforms, grid stability, energy transition and opportunities for technical collaboration.
NISO said the partnership would support efforts to strengthen electricity market operations and improve the efficiency and resilience of Nigeria’s power system. The organisation also highlighted the importance of adopting modern technologies and international best practices.
The Canadian High Commissioner expressed Canada’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in the energy sector. He said Canada’s experience and expertise could support Nigeria’s efforts to address challenges affecting electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
Both sides agreed that continued collaboration, knowledge sharing and investment would be important in building a more reliable and sustainable electricity system capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic growth.
