The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asked First Bank Plc to place a restriction on an account belonging to the Osun State Government, days before the state’s governorship election.

The commission reportedly requested that the account be placed on a “Post-No-Debit” status, which would prevent withdrawals and other debit transactions.

The affected account is the Osun State Government Statutory Allocation Account, with the EFCC citing provisions of the EFCC Establishment Act and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act as the basis for its request.

The development comes shortly after Gov. Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze accounts belonging to the state government and some officials ahead of the Aug. 15 governorship election.

The Osun State Government has since moved to challenge the EFCC’s action in court, describing the restriction as unlawful and potentially capable of disrupting government operations.
