The Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, Mr Taiwo Oyekan, has presented bursary awards to 200 indigent students to support their tertiary education.
Oyekan, represented by the Vice Chairman, Mr Arulai Folami, presented the awards at the council secretariat in Lagos on Tuesday. He said the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians while reducing the rate of school dropouts.
According to him, 60 medical students received N100,000 each, while 140 students studying Social Sciences and Management Sciences received N50,000 each.
He added that the scheme followed the establishment of a five-member Bursary Committee to ensure a transparent selection process.
Oyekan said the intervention would complement the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and align with the educational objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies and become good ambassadors of Lagos Island.
The Chairman of the Bursary Committee, Mr Moshood Maiyegun, urged the students to improve their academic performance and maintain self-discipline. A beneficiary, Mr Adeyemi Adediran, appreciated the council for providing the tertiary education support, while the council said other educational initiatives included free school buses, learning materials, summer coaching and free UTME and GCE forms.
