The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) launched a sweeping, nationwide enforcement operation yesterday, July 22, 2026, targeting all alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles under 200 millilitres.
The coordinated raid, which is taking place simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, marks the full implementation of the Federal Government’s ban on high-concentration, small-pack alcohol.
Enforcement teams fanned out across key commercial hubs, including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Onitsha, and Port Harcourt. Agents targeted major distribution channels such as Open-air markets and retail shops, Motor parks and transit hubs and Local bars, joints, and roadside hawkers.
The operation follows the immediate seal-off and shutdown of several non-compliant manufacturing facilities nationwide. NAFDAC officers confiscated thousands of small plastic bottles and sachet packs, marking them for destruction.
Speaking on the enforcement in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye ordered all commercial entities in the supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, retailers, and transporters to immediately surrender remaining stock.
”Continued possession, transportation, or sale of these prohibited products constitutes a direct violation of the law and will attract immediate seizure, severe regulatory sanctions, and legal prosecution.”
Says Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC. The agency reiterated that the ban does not affect compliant manufacturers operating within approved packaging sizes (200ml and above), but strictly targets small-format packages deemed hazardous to public health.
The ban targets key public health concerns regarding small-format alcohol. NAFDAC urged members of the public to support the exercise by boycotting the banned products and reporting non-compliant distributors to regional offices.
