The Ogun House of Assembly has passed a resolution exonerating the former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of an allegation of embezzlement linked to his removal in 2024.
The Assembly also commuted Oluomo’s impeachment to a resignation through a resolution adopted during the plenary on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The resolution followed the presentation of the Committee of the Whole House report by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Lateefat Ajayi.
The report was based on a motion earlier presented by Oluomo to the Assembly on March 31.
Ajayi moved the motion for the report’s adoption, seconded by Mr Yusuf Amosun and unanimously approved through a voice vote.
The House held that the allegation of embezzlement was not contained in the notice of removal served on Oluomo.
It said the allegation could not be established against the former Speaker based on the available evidence.
The Assembly also considered Oluomo’s plea for exoneration or evidence supporting the allegation, citing Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The report stated that the House reviewed the available evidence before withdrawing the embezzlement allegation.
It said the allegation would no longer form part of the reasons for Oluomo’s removal from office.
The Assembly further resolved to overturn Oluomo’s removal and commute it to a resignation.
It said the decision was taken in the interest of camaraderie, unity and harmony among members.
