The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of six persons after lightning struck a group of farm workers during a heavy rainstorm in Ganye Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said in a statement on Monday that the incident occurred at about 4 p.m. on Sunday in Dadiri-Tirigali village. He said the police received an emergency report from the Ganye Divisional Headquarters that lightning had struck nine people working on a farm.
Nguroje said police personnel were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found the victims lying unconscious. He added that three of the victims later regained consciousness, while six others were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The police described the incident as a tragic natural disaster and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. The command also urged residents to observe safety precautions during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly when working in open fields.
