The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, in partnership with the Enugu State Government, officially commissioned the operational phase of the South-East Digital Innovation Zone (SDIZ) on Friday, July 17, 2026.
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to serve as a regional incubator for artificial intelligence, software engineering, and hardware development. ​
Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, led the delegation to Enugu alongside Governor Peter Mbah, cutting the ribbon at the tech complex located along Independence Layout at 10:00 AM. ​
The tech hub is part of a broader federal initiative to build localized digital infrastructure across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. According to ministry officials, the Enugu facility aims to train and equip over 50,000 young Nigerians in the South-East with globally competitive tech skills over the next three years.
The hub features dedicated centers for robotics research, data analytics, and a specialized blockchain development sandbox. A critical component of the SDIZ is the “Founder’s Corner,” an on-site accelerator where local startups can pitch directly to international tech investors for seed funding.
To bypass grid unreliability, the facility is entirely powered by a newly installed 500kW solar farm, ensuring 24/7 uninterrupted access for local developers. ​
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Governor Peter Mbah emphasized that the facility aligns with the state’s vision to transition Enugu from a public-sector-driven economy into a premier digital commerce hub. ​
“This is not just a building with computers; it is an economic engine,” Governor Mbah stated. “By giving our youths the tools to build global solutions from right here in Enugu, we are systematically reducing unemployment and positioning the state as the Silicon Valley of West Africa.”
​The facility will open its doors to its first cohort of 2,500 software engineering students on Monday, August 3, 2026, with application portals already live on the ministry’s digital portal.
