WHEN the Barrister Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego led Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, House of Assembly Caucus made a press release against the threats on the life of the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, the Caucus did not mince words positing the obvious – let Nigerians decide for Nigeria at the polls; stop threatening the life of their choice candidate.
In a country where it appears that some individuals are so powerful that they can utter threats without being resisted, it is also possible for them to carry out their threats with uninhibited impunity.
The time to sieve the condiments is now, or else the cook will stand to answer salient questions. Talk about letting go one’s voice while the surging flood is yet at ankle-level; just a blink of negligence and you would have it up to your knee, waist, neck and, for a bad measure, your bucal cavity and upwards.
It is of grave concern that the NDC presidential candidate was publicly expressing fears that he might not be alive for the 2027 polls, given the myriad of attacks and threats being hurled at him by dangerous political elements.
The House of Assembly Caucus reiterated that Peter Obi’s “recent disclosures on the #WithChude podcast laid bare a pattern of deliberate frustration by forces determined to keep him off 2027 ballot.”
For the man “who has earned the trust of millions across every region of this country,” now publicly contemplating the possibility that he “may not be alive” to contest the election “is not a private grievance but a national calamity”, said the Caucus.
Indeed, some cadres of madness need to be addressed before certain persons of interest get bitten by the teeth of politically voracious carnivores. The House of Assembly Caucus also stated that the threat to the life of Mr Peter Obi is “a national emergency, and the Caucus will not treat it with the silence on which impunity depends.
” Do we now assume that all the attempts to put Peter Obi out of the 2027 political conversation have failed, so far, leaving some of the desperadoes with only life threats? Well, the Barrister Umennajiego-led Caucus has straightened out thus, “We will not be silent while the powers that be attempt to push Peter Obi out of the ballot through threats to life and intimidation rather than through the ballot”.
They also stressed that “any resort to violence, sabotage, or covert coercion against Mr Peter Obi or any other political actor is a direct assault on the Nigerian constitution and an affront to the millions of citizens whose hope for a redirected nation rests on free and fair contest.”
While calling on Nigerians and civil society organisations to “watch closely as the road to 2027 unfolds,” the Caucus called on the country’s security architecture to guarantee Mr Peter Obi’s “security without delay, and threat against him with the seriousness it deserves.
” Peter Obi Express Media appreciates the swift reaction of the House of Assembly Caucus to this issue of life-threat, while also asking the likes of David Umahi, who said that there was no threat to Peter Obi’s life, to tell Nigerians if he has switched to the Ministry of Information or any of the media portfolios of the federal government or the APC. Meanwhile, debate topics are emerging by the ticks of the seconds. Nigeria must be OK!
