The Niger State Government has inaugurated a plant nursery as part of its plan to plant more than two million trees across the state to promote environmental restoration and tackle climate change.
The nursery, located at Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, was inaugurated by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Alhaji Abubakar Musa, in partnership with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project and the university.
Musa said the initiative formed part of the state government’s land restoration and climate change mitigation strategy.
He added that six species of tree seedlings, including cashew and moringa, would be cultivated at the nursery, while public awareness campaigns on the importance of tree planting would be intensified.
Also speaking, the Director of Forestry and Wildlife Services, Mr Sheriff Musa, said the seedlings were ready for distribution and that measures had been put in place to ensure they reached the intended beneficiaries.
He added that similar nurseries would be established in other parts of the state and urged every household to support the initiative by planting at least four trees.
