As political stakeholders begin early preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has challenged legal practitioners to prioritize national interest, uphold judicial integrity, and champion the rule of law to guarantee a credible electoral process.
Governor Yusuf made the call on Friday during a high-level interactive session with members of the bench and bar, emphasizing that the stability of Nigeria’s democracy relies heavily on the independence and fairness of its legal institution.
Speaking through the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN, the Governor stressed that a peaceful and fair election cannot be achieved without a disciplined legal framework that rejects manipulation.
”As we gradually approach the 2027 general elections, the burden on our legal professionals becomes even heavier,” Governor Yusuf stated. “Lawyers must stand firmly as unbiased arbiters and protectors of the people’s mandate. The rule of law must override political expediency if we are to sustain public trust in our democratic institutions.”
The Governor noted that early sensitization and strict adherence to constitutional provisions would prevent the post-election litigations that often create avoidable tension across the country.
Reflecting on previous electoral cycles, the Kano State Chief Executive urged lawyers to resist attempts by desperate politicians to use the courts to subvert the will of the electorate. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting judicial reforms in Kano State that promote transparency and swift dispensation of justice.
Legal stakeholders at the event praised the state government’s proactive engagement, acknowledging that an early commitment to ethical legal practices is vital to mitigating political friction long before the 2027 ballots are cast.
