The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Rivers State has penalized 44 corps members for various infractions committed during their just-concluded service year.
The disciplinary actions were made public by the NYSC State Public Relations Officer, Mr. Christian Okereke, during a low-key passing-out ceremony held on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt.
Out of the 2,361 corps members deployed to the state under the 2025 Batch B Stream 1, 35 individuals, comprising 21 males and 14 females will serve various terms of service extension. Meanwhile, nine corps members, consisting of seven males and two females, have been ordered to repeat the entire service year from scratch for severe violations of the scheme’s bylaws, including abscondment from their places of primary assignment.
Speaking at the event, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Moses Oleghe, expressed deep disappointment over the behavior of the disciplined individuals. He admonished the remaining corps members to carry the core values of the scheme into the labor market.
“Continue to uphold the ideals of NYSC as you climb the ladder of life,” Mr. Oleghe stated. “Remember the ideals of patriotism, discipline, honesty, integrity, commitment, and dedication to duty. Please, imbibe and uphold it in your daily lives in order to build a successful life and career.”
Mr. Oleghe also expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the host communities for providing a secure and enabling environment, noting with relief that the state recorded zero corps member deaths during the service period.
While the big stick was wielded on erring youths, outstanding service did not go unrecognized. Two corps members, one male and one female were selected to receive the prestigious State Honour Award following their exceptional execution of impactful Community Development Service (CDS) projects within their host communities.
