The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, says the commission is collaborating with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to strengthen Nigeria’s national address system through the provisions of the new NIMC Act.
Coker-Odusote disclosed this at a strategic collaborative meeting between NIMC and NIPOST in Abuja, describing the engagement as a formal step toward integrating the country’s identity and address systems.
According to her, the partnership demonstrates both organisations’ commitment to building an integrated national ecosystem where identity and location information work together to improve governance, service delivery, economic participation and the everyday lives of Nigerians.
She said the new NIMC Act not only modernised the legal framework for digital identity but also positioned the commission as the custodian of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for identity and the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
“This expanded mandate places NIMC at the centre of the country’s trusted digital ecosystem.
“It enables us to provide the secure identity foundation upon which government services, digital transactions, authentication, electronic signatures and trust-based digital interactions can thrive,” she said.
The NIMC boss said a functional digital ecosystem depended on trusted identity and accurate location data, explaining that while the National Identification Number (NIN) established who an individual was, the national postcode system identified where the person could be reliably reached.
“Together, these two national assets create a powerful foundation for inclusive governance and digital transformation. This is why our collaboration with NIPOST is both timely and strategic,” she added.
Earlier, the Postmaster-General of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi, commended Coker-Odusote and her team for their leadership, openness and strategic foresight in advancing the partnership.
She also lauded the teams from both organisations and other stakeholders for their commitment to the initiative.
“This partnership is not merely about aligning databases or integrating systems; it is about creating value for citizens,” Odeyemi said.
According to her, the collaboration aligns with NIPOST’s transformation agenda of repositioning the postal service as a modern national infrastructure institution.
“The vision is clear: connecting Nigeria, delivering solutions and improving lives, and this partnership represents one of the most important pillars of that vision,” she said.
Coker-Odusote added that the collaboration aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy and improving access to both financial and non-financial services.
She said the partnership would also enhance logistics, making it easier and more seamless for Nigerians to carry out everyday transactions across the country.
