Families of five missing NELAN engineers, who were supervising an AfDB-funded project in Ebonyi State, have petitioned various judicial and governmental bodies over alleged irregularities.
Court records reveal that suspects charged in connection with the engineers’ disappearance were granted bail on self-recognizance, later received an Ebonyi State Government amnesty, and repeatedly failed to appear in court.
The prosecution admitted it could not proceed with the case as witnesses became reluctant after the government granted amnesty to the defendants.
Despite the defendants’ repeated absences, the court granted bail, and the families question the legality of this, especially since murder is not typically a bailable offense.
The families are seeking an investigation into these developments, fearing they indicate an attempt to shield those responsible for the disappearance of their loved ones.
