Tears of joy and songs of thanksgiving filled the air in the Omugo community, located in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, as residents celebrated the safe return of the final three abducted members of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA).
​The congregants regained their freedom after spending a harrowing 105 days in captivity following their abduction by gunmen.
​The atmosphere in the community turned ecstatic as family members, church congregants, and well-wishers gathered to welcome the survivors. For over three months, the community had been plunged into anxiety, holding regular prayer vigils for the safe return of their loved ones.
​”We are overwhelmed with joy. It felt like a hopeless situation, but today, our prayers have been answered,” said a visibly emotional family member during the reception.
​The victims were among a larger group initially targeted by armed bandits who raided the community and targeted church worshippers. While some captives managed to escape or were released in the weeks following the incident, these final three individuals remained in the custody of their captors under grueling conditions.
​Details surrounding the specifics of their release remain guarded due to security sensitivities, but community leaders confirmed that the survivors are currently undergoing medical checkups and trauma counseling to aid their reintegration.
​While the return of the worshippers has brought immense relief, local leaders and residents are using the opportunity to appeal to the Kwara State Government and security agencies for permanent security presence in the area.
Community elders are requesting regular military and police patrols along the vulnerable borders of the Ifelodun LGA. Local vigilante groups are calling for better synergy with state security forces to prevent future incursions by armed bands.
​For now, the people of Omugo are focusing on healing, united in celebration of an answer to their collective prayers.
