The Independent National Electoral Commission has unveiled a self-service online voter registration platform aimed at making voter registration more accessible and encouraging greater participation in Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly among eligible first-time voters.
The development marks another step in the Commission’s ongoing efforts to modernise electoral services by leveraging technology to simplify voter registration and improve service delivery across the country.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq, announced the initiative during a news briefing held on Tuesday in Lafia.
Speaking at the briefing, Abubakar-Sadiq explained that the new online registration platform would become operational on Wednesday, July 8, through the Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal.
According to him, the initiative is designed to make the registration process more convenient by allowing eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their voter registration without the need to visit an INEC office at the initial stage.
He said prospective voters would be able to access detailed, step-by-step registration guidelines on the portal, making it easier for users to understand and complete the process correctly.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner explained that the self-service platform would enable eligible first-time voters to initiate and complete their registration using personal electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets or computers.
He noted that the digital system would also allow users to carry out biometric capture electronically as part of the registration process, significantly reducing the stress and time traditionally associated with physical registration at INEC offices.
According to Abubakar-Sadiq, the innovation reflects the Commission’s commitment to embracing technology in order to improve efficiency, reduce overcrowding at registration centres and expand access to electoral services for Nigerians, regardless of their location.
He emphasised that the initiative is expected to encourage more eligible citizens, particularly young people who have recently attained voting age, to register and participate actively in future elections.
The REC observed that increasing voter registration remains one of the Commission’s priorities as it seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process through wider citizen participation.
He added that by simplifying the registration process and making it available online, INEC hopes to remove many of the barriers that have discouraged eligible voters from registering in previous exercises.
Abubakar-Sadiq also urged eligible Nigerians who have not previously registered to take advantage of the new digital platform as soon as it becomes operational.
He encouraged applicants to carefully follow all instructions provided on the portal to ensure the successful completion of their registration and avoid errors that could delay the process.
The Commissioner further assured members of the public that the Commission remains committed to maintaining the integrity, security and credibility of the voter registration exercise while ensuring that only qualified citizens are captured in the national voter register.
He reiterated that the introduction of the online self-service registration platform is part of broader reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s electoral system and delivering more efficient services to citizens.
The initiative is also expected to reduce pressure on INEC offices during Continuous Voter Registration exercises by allowing applicants to complete much of the process remotely before any required verification.
With the introduction of the digital platform, the electoral commission hopes to make voter registration faster, easier and more inclusive, while promoting greater civic engagement and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
INEC expressed optimism that the innovation would significantly improve access to voter registration services and contribute to increased participation in future elections, reinforcing the Commission’s commitment to free, fair and credible electoral processes across the country.
