The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has reunited a 53-year-old deportee from the United States, Mr Peter Guobadia, with his family after rescuing him from the streets of Benin City and facilitating his medical treatment.
According to the ministry, Guobadia was found wandering along Airport Road in Benin City in a state of mental distress before officials took him into protective custody.
Acting on the directive of the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, ministry officials arranged for his admission to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Uselu, where he underwent medical evaluation and received psychiatric care.
The ministry said sustained efforts, including public appeals through the media, led to the successful tracing of his relatives, culminating in his reunion with his family.
The Commissioner said the intervention reflects the state government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable persons, including deportees and individuals facing mental health challenges, through rehabilitation and family reintegration.
Family members expressed appreciation to the Edo State Government for its intervention, while the ministry said it would continue to monitor Guobadia’s recovery and provide the necessary support to aid his reintegration.
The case forms part of the state’s broader efforts to provide welfare support for vulnerable returnees through collaboration with healthcare institutions and social welfare agencies.
