The Bauchi State Government has launched a rural campaign to combat waterborne diseases by improving access to clean water, promoting hygiene practices and strengthening sanitation infrastructure in vulnerable communities across the state.
The initiative, coordinated by the Bauchi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) in collaboration with relevant ministries and development partners, is aimed at reducing the prevalence of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and typhoid, particularly in underserved rural communities.
Speaking on the initiative, state officials said the campaign would focus on expanding access to safe drinking water, improving sanitation facilities and educating residents on proper hygiene practices to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.
Officials explained that the campaign includes the construction and rehabilitation of hand-pump boreholes, installation of solar-powered water schemes, provision of sanitation facilities in schools and healthcare centres, water quality monitoring and community sensitisation programmes.
The government said traditional rulers, community leaders and development partners would play key roles in encouraging behavioural change and promoting safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices in rural communities.
The campaign builds on the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector through partnerships with organisations, including UNICEF and WaterAid, to improve access to clean water and reduce preventable diseases.
Authorities noted that seasonal flooding and inadequate sanitation continue to expose many rural communities to water contamination, making preventive interventions critical to protecting public health.
Residents have been urged to support the campaign by maintaining good hygiene, using safe sources of drinking water, making proper use of sanitation facilities and promptly reporting suspected outbreaks to health authorities.
The initiative forms part of the Bauchi State Government’s broader commitment to improving public health and achieving sustainable access to clean water and sanitation across the state.
