The Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN Niger) has recorded a major milestone in African higher education after emerging as the highest-ranked university in the Republic of Niger in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.
The landmark achievement positions the institution not only as the premier university in Niger but also as the 14th most prestigious private university across the African continent, establishing MAAUN as a beacon of academic excellence, research, and sustainable development.
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MAAUN Niger’s top-tier placement underscores its deep commitment to addressing global challenges through quality education, innovative research, and community empowerment.
The university demonstrated standout performances across several critical metrics, including Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; Placing them in the highly competitive 401–600th band globally.
The university performance in Good Health and Wellbeing ranked within the 601–800th bracket worldwide and Gender Equality, Securing a prominent position in the 801–1000th global band.
Founded by Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, MAAUN Niger made history upon its establishment in Maradi in 2013 as the first English-speaking university in the Republic of Niger and the first bilingual university in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the last decade, the institution has strategically expanded its footprint, including the successful launch of its sister campus, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN Kano), in 2022.
