President Bola Tinubu has announced a major reform to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), disclosing that corps members will now be deployed to states facing security challenges, provided such deployments are guided by strict, proactive risk assessments.
​The President shared this update as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the national youth service scheme to better meet contemporary national needs while maintaining a firm commitment to the safety of participants.
​Under the new policy framework, the federal government will no longer implement blanket exemptions for states experiencing security issues. Instead, deployments will be dynamic and data-driven.
Details of the reform states that security agencies and the NYSC management will continuously evaluate local conditions to determine safe zones within complex regions.
Corps members will only be sent to areas certified as stable and secure by these assessments, ensuring they can contribute to local communities without being exposed to undue danger.
The government has pledged enhanced security measures and closer collaboration with state commands to protect corps members in their places of primary assignment.
​President Tinubu emphasized that the youth remain at the center of national development and that these reforms are aimed at fostering national unity while modernizing the scheme’s operational approach.
​The administration reiterates that the welfare and safety of corps members remain a top priority, and no youth will be intentionally placed in harm’s way. Further guidelines regarding the implementation of the risk-assessment framework are expected to be released by the NYSC directorate in due course.
