The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) says social media has become a major tool for political awareness and voter education in Nigeria, transforming citizens’ participation in governance and electoral processes.

Mr Augustine Aigbe, WADEMOS Regional Advocacy Officer, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, noting that digital platforms had democratised access to political information and expanded civic engagement.

He, however, warned that the growing spread of misinformation on social media posed a challenge, stressing the need for users to verify information before sharing it.

Aigbe urged government institutions and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make greater use of social media to communicate policies, educate voters and encourage wider participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also called on civil society organisations to leverage digital platforms to combat vote-buying, promote electoral transparency and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
