Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights activist and former chairman of the national human rights commission has raised serious concerns over the actions of the national assembly in the ongoing process to establish state police.
According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he pointed out that the bill was passed in minutes without publishing it or bringing it to public notice.
The former human rights commission chairman, while lamenting over the actions of the Senate, pointed out that their attitude towards the establishment of the state police was suspicious.
He maintained that while many had clamored for the creation of state police, arguing that it’s establishment will curb insecurity and make Nigeria work, the APC government have a different agenda.
The plan, according to Chidi Odinkalu, was transparent, a carefully arranged process to ensure the creation of a lawful militia for APC governors before the 2027 general elections.
He urged the public not to relent in their demands for a sane society. However, he maintained that the hastiness and secrecy at which the Senate was going about the process needed answers.
