The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the appointments of two commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, paving the way for their inclusion in the state’s executive council as the administration continues efforts to strengthen governance and service delivery across the state.
The confirmation came after lawmakers subjected the nominees to a screening exercise during plenary and unanimously endorsed their appointments following a voice vote conducted by the Speaker of the House, Tukur Bala.
The newly confirmed commissioners are Alhaji Nura Tangaza and Dr. Bashir Achida, both of whom are expected to assume key responsibilities within the Sokoto State Executive Council once assigned portfolios by the governor.
The development marks another step in Governor Aliyu’s efforts to consolidate his administration by filling strategic positions with individuals considered capable of supporting the implementation of government policies and developmental programmes.
During the plenary session, the Majority Leader of the House, Bello Idris, representing Gwadabawa North Constituency, moved the motion for the confirmation of the nominees. He explained that the governor’s request was in compliance with the provisions of Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers state governors to appoint commissioners subject to confirmation by the state legislature.
Idris urged members of the Assembly to support the nominees, describing them as competent individuals with the experience, character and capacity required to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of Sokoto State.
According to him, both nominees possess records of public service and professional accomplishment that make them suitable for executive responsibilities.
He further stated that their appointments would strengthen the administration’s commitment to delivering democratic dividends to residents of the state.
“The nominees are people of proven integrity and experience who will add value to the efforts of the present administration in promoting good governance and implementing policies that will positively impact the lives of citizens,” the Majority Leader told lawmakers.
Following the presentation of the motion, the nominees underwent screening before the Committee of the Whole House, where lawmakers assessed their qualifications, experience and readiness to serve in government.
The screening process provided an opportunity for members of the Assembly to evaluate the nominees’ understanding of governance issues, public administration and the developmental needs of the state.
Legislative screening of commissioner-nominees is regarded as an important constitutional responsibility designed to ensure that individuals appointed into executive positions possess the competence and credibility necessary to discharge their duties effectively.
After the screening exercise, the Speaker, Tukur Bala, asked members to vote on the confirmation of the nominees. The motion received overwhelming support, with lawmakers unanimously approving the appointments through a voice vote.
The unanimous endorsement reflected the confidence of the Assembly in the ability of the nominees to serve the state effectively and work harmoniously with other members of the executive council.
Political observers note that the confirmation demonstrates the continued cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government in Sokoto State.
