The Sokoto State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointment of two new commissioners nominated by Gov. Ahmed Aliyu and adopted the legislative calendar for the Fourth Session of the 10th assembly.
The confirmation followed the screening of the nominees during plenary on Thursday, after a motion moved by the House Majority Leader, Alhaji Bello Idris, (APC-Gwadabawa North).
Presenting the motion, Idris said the governor forwarded the names of the nominees in line with Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
According to him, the nominees are persons of proven integrity and dedication who have served the state and the nation in various capacities.
“Their appointments will assist the governor in effectively discharging his constitutional responsibilities.
“The nominations were made after wide consultations across different segments of society and in compliance with Section 14(4) of the Constitution,” he said.
Following the screening conducted at the Committee of the Whole, the Speaker, Alhaji Tukur Bala, put the confirmation to a voice vote, which was unanimously approved by the lawmakers.
The two nominees confirmed as commissioners and members of the State Executive Council are Alhaji Nura Tangaza and Dr Bashir Achida.
Speaking separately after their confirmation, the new commissioners expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to support Gov. Aliyu in implementing development projects across the state.
Meanwhile, the assembly also adopted the Fourth Session sitting calendar of the 10th assembly, which will run from June 23, 2026, to May 27, 2027.
The adoption followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader and seconded by Kabiru Dauda, APC-Gada East.
Idris explained that the calendar was prepared in compliance with Section 104 of the 1999 Constitution, “which requires a house of assembly to sit for not less than 181 days in a legislative year.”
He said the approved calendar provides for a total of 184 sitting days.
“The first quarter commenced on June 23 and will end on Sept. 24, after which members will proceed on recess until Oct. 12 to enable them to visit their constituencies.
“The second quarter will run from Oct. 13 to Dec. 31, before another break for New Year celebrations and participation in activities related to the 2027 general elections.
“The third quarter will commence on Feb. 16, 2027, with an adjournment from Feb. 25 to March 16 for members to perform Lesser Hajj and celebrate Eid-el-Fitr. This will be followed by a recess from March 26 to April 12, 2027,” he said.
Idris further explained that the fourth quarter would run from April 13 to May 27, 2027.
“During this period, the House will adjourn from May 6 to May 25 to allow members to perform the Hajj pilgrimage and celebrate Eid-el-Kabir before proceeding on sine die adjournment on May 28, 2027,” he added.
The speaker subsequently put the motion for the adoption of the calendar to a voice vote, and it was unanimously approved by the house.
