Nigeria’s gross gas production has increased to 7.63 billion standard cubic feet per day, up from about 6.83 billion in 2023, the Presidency has said.
Mrs Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Oil and Gas, disclosed this during the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce Energy Day 2026, according to a copy of her presentation made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
Verheijen said Nigeria’s proven gas reserves now exceed 215 trillion cubic feet, attributing the growth to presidential directives that improved the operating environment for deep-water, non-associated gas and midstream infrastructure projects.
She said reforms by President Bola Tinubu’s administration had reduced contracting timelines from 36 months to about 14 months, boosting investor confidence.
According to her, Nigeria’s share of African upstream Final Investment Decisions rose from about four per cent in 2023 to roughly 40 per cent across 2024 and 2025, attracting about 10 billion dollars in commitments.
She added that stalled projects, including Bonga North and Ubeta, had resumed, while new gas developments were strengthening long-term supply for LNG exports.
Verheijen also said the administration was repositioning gas as a key driver of industrialisation and restoring liquidity to the gas-to-power value chain through the Presidential Power Sector Debt Reduction Programme.
She noted that the Federal Executive Council approved a bond programme of up to N4 trillion to settle verified debts owed to generation and gas companies, describing the initiative as a strategic step to encourage investment in the sector.
