The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled the official timetable for the 2026 Commonwealth Games National Trials in Lagos.
The three-day event is scheduled for June 20 to 22 and will determine Nigeria’s representatives for the Games. AFN Head of Media, Maxwell Kumoye, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.
Kumoye said the championship would serve as the final selection event for athletes seeking Commonwealth Games qualification. He stated that the trials would feature the nation’s leading track and field athletes across several disciplines.
The events include sprint, middle-distance, long-distance and field competitions involving established and emerging talents.
Competition will begin on Saturday with the women’s 5,000m final and men’s discus final. The opening day will also feature heats of the men’s and women’s 100m races. Kumoye said the programme would include the men’s high jump final and 400m opening heats.
“The opening day will also feature the men’s high jump final and the opening heats,” he said. The afternoon session will focus on the women’s long jump and women’s shot put finals.
It will also feature the men’s and women’s 800m finals alongside other major track events. “The women’s 100m heats, men’s triple jump final and men’s 5,000m final are scheduled,” Kumoye said.
Day-Two will begin with the men’s and women’s 10,000m race walk events. The second day will also feature finals in the women’s javelin and triple jump.
The men’s and women’s hammer throw finals are also listed on the timetable. Track action will include the 400m hurdles heats for both male and female athletes.
The semi-finals of the men’s and women’s 100m and 400m events will follow. “The day will conclude with the finals of the men’s and women’s 100m events,” Kumoye said.
He described the races as among the biggest highlights of the championship. The final day will feature heats in the men’s 110m hurdles and women’s 100m hurdles.
The men’s and women’s 200m events will also commence with their opening heats. Kumoye said the concluding afternoon session would provide exciting contests for spectators.
The finals will include the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles and men’s javelin. The women’s high jump and men’s and women’s 1,500m races are also scheduled.
The women’s discus final and 400m finals will further attract attention before the closing events. The championship will conclude with sprint hurdles and 200m finals.
Kumoye expressed confidence that the trials would produce quality performances from Nigerian athletes. He said the competition would provide opportunities for both stars and rising talents.
“With national pride and Commonwealth Games qualification at stake, we expect a highly competitive championship,” he said.
Kumoye added that the trials would ensure a fair and transparent selection process. “The trials will provide a fair platform for selecting the nation’s best athletes,” he said.
