A sharp increase in the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has forced many residents of Osun State to turn to alternative cooking methods.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Osogbo, several residents lamented that they can no longer afford LPG, which has spiked to approximately ₦2,000 per kilogram.
The situation has caused residents to return to Solid Fuels, Unable to cope with the soaring prices, families are increasingly relying on cheaper, traditional alternatives like charcoal and firewood for their daily cooking needs.
Residents expressed frustration over the continuous rise in living costs, noting that refueling a standard 12.5kg cylinder now costs around ₦25,000, a price point far beyond the reach of average households.
Analysts warn that the widespread shift back to firewood and charcoal could lead to increased deforestation and heightened respiratory health risks due to smoke inhalation.
The affected citizens have called on the federal and state governments to intervene in the energy market to crash the price of cooking gas and alleviate the financial burden on everyday Nigerians.
