The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Professor Sadiq Gombe, has expressed confidence in the party’s position in an ongoing legal dispute over the party’s leadership, following the adjournment of proceedings by a Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse, Abuja.
The court on Wednesday postponed further hearing in the matter until July 28, 2026, after crucial banking documents expected to be tendered as evidence were not made available, preventing the continuation of the proceedings.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the court session, Gombe maintained that the adjournment would not affect the party’s confidence in the case, insisting that the SDP remained committed to pursuing the matter through legal means.
According to him, the delay stemmed from the inability of the financial institution involved to produce a bank statement requested by the prosecution and considered important to the case. Gombe explained that efforts had initially been made to obtain the required documents directly from the bank.
However, the process was not completed within the timeframe set by the court, prompting legal representatives to seek alternative measures. He disclosed that the legal team subsequently approached the court registry to secure a subpoena compelling the bank to provide the documents needed for the hearing.
“We approached the court registry to secure a subpoena directing the bank to produce the statement,” Gombe said while addressing reporters. According to the SDP chairman, officials of the bank informed the court that the requested statement was extensive and could not be released immediately due to internal procedures that required authorization from the institution’s headquarters.
He further noted that the bank also indicated that the documents would need to undergo an official certification process before they could be submitted as evidence in court. The explanation, according to Gombe, was accepted by the court, which consequently granted an adjournment to allow sufficient time for the documents to be processed and produced.
Despite the delay, Gombe expressed optimism that the evidence would ultimately strengthen the party’s case and contribute to a fair determination of the issues before the court. He emphasized that the SDP leadership remained respectful of the judicial process and would continue to cooperate with all legal requirements as the matter progresses.
The leadership dispute, which has generated considerable attention within political circles, is understood to involve issues relating to the administration and internal affairs of the party. While details of the allegations and counterclaims remain subject to judicial determination, the case has become a significant test of the party’s ability to manage internal disagreements through established legal and democratic channels.
Observers at the court noted that the proceedings on Wednesday were brief, largely focusing on the status of the expected banking records and the efforts being made to secure them. The adjournment means that substantive hearing of the case will resume on July 28, when the court is expected to review the requested bank statement and determine the next course of action. For now, SDP leaders and supporters are awaiting the continuation of proceedings, with Gombe insisting that the party remains confident that the facts and evidence presented before the court will ultimately vindicate its position.
