​Nigeria’s porous borders have become a major catalyst for escalating terrorism, banditry, and transnational crimes, according to the National Security Adviser (NSA). In response to these mounting vulnerabilities, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for an immediate overhaul of the nation’s border management systems, advocating for advanced technological integration and deeper regional collaborations to secure the country. ​
Speaking on the critical gaps in national security, the NSA highlighted that unmanned and poorly monitored border points provide easy transit routes for criminal elements. Insurgents and bandits exploit these blind spots to smuggle sophisticated weapons, evade law enforcement, and launch cross-border raids. Beyond violent crime, porous boundaries facilitate illicit trade, human trafficking, and drug smuggling, severely undermining Nigeria’s economic stability.
Traditional physical policing has proven insufficient given the vast, rugged terrain stretching across thousands of kilometers. ​Addressing the security challenge, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that relying solely on physical barriers is outdated. He urged a shift toward modern, intelligence-driven border enforcement.
​”We cannot secure a 21st-century nation with 20th-century methods. Our borders require a digital shield and stronger diplomatic alliances.” ​Akpabio outlined a two-pronged strategy to fortify Nigeria’s frontiers; Regional Ties and Technological Integration. The deployment of cutting-edge technologies including long-range surveillance drones, biometric tracking systems, infrared sensors, and satellite imaging to monitor blind spots in real time.
Strengthening bilateral agreements and joint military task forces with neighboring countries (such as Niger, Chad, and Cameroon) to ensure coordinated patrol operations and seamless intelligence sharing. ​The Senate President assured that the National Assembly is ready to provide the necessary legislative framework and budgetary support to acquire state-of-the-art surveillance infrastructure.
Lawmakers are expected to review existing border security policies to fast-track funding for tech procurement and capacity building for immigration and customs personnel.
