In a major blow to insurgency networks in the Northeast, the Nigerian military has successfully neutralized at least 27 terrorists during a series of coordinated precision airstrikes targeting deep-forest hideouts in Borno State.
The operation, executed by the air component of the joint counter-terrorism task force, dismantled several strategic command posts and logistics bases used by the insurgents to launch attacks on civilian and military targets. According to top military intelligence sources, the airstrikes were authorized following days of rigorous Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Aerial footage and ground intelligence had confirmed an unusual gathering of high-profile terrorists plotting a series of coordinated ambushes across the Lake Chad basin region. ”The air interdiction was swift and highly precise,” a senior military official stated on the condition of anonymity.
“Our combat aircraft deployed precision-guided munitions directly onto the coordinates of the hideouts. Initial battle damage assessment confirms that 27 terrorists were eliminated on the spot, while several structures housing their weaponry and fuel reserves were completely engulfed in flames.”
The targeted camps, hidden under heavy foliage to evade detection, served as key launchpads for both the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram factions operating in the region.
In addition to the casualties, the airstrikes effectively disrupted the insurgents’ operational capabilities by destroying their Weaponry storage facilities, Concealed transport vehicles and motorcycles and temporary makeshift barracks Ground troops have since been deployed to comb the peripheral areas, clear the remaining debris, and ensure that fleeing remnants of the terrorist groups are contained.
The success of this operation underscores the military’s renewed aggressive posture against terrorism in Nigeria’s North-East. Over the past few months, the armed forces have increasingly relied on advanced aerial capabilities and joint intelligence operations to flush out insurgents from their traditional strongholds.
Local communities have been urged by defense authorities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or movements, particularly those seeking medical attention for gunshot or shrapnel wounds, to the nearest security agency.
