The Ogun State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, concealed, unauthorised or completely absent registration number plates, as part of intensified efforts to enhance security and curb criminal activities across the state.
The command said the exercise is in compliance with a directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police and is aimed at eliminating the anonymity often exploited by criminal elements to perpetrate unlawful acts and evade identification by law enforcement agencies.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders across the state to ensure strict enforcement of the directive.
The police chief instructed officers to impound any vehicle found operating in violation of the regulations governing vehicle registration plates and to conduct thorough investigations in line with existing laws.
The command explained that the operation is not limited to vehicles with concealed or missing registration numbers but also extends to those displaying fake, improperly issued, altered or otherwise unauthorised number plates.
According to security experts, the use of obscured or fake registration numbers has become a recurring challenge for law enforcement agencies, particularly in the investigation of crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft, cult-related violence and other criminal activities where suspects often rely on anonymity to avoid detection.
The Ogun State Police Command noted that proper vehicle identification remains a critical component of modern policing, intelligence gathering and crime prevention strategies.
The statement emphasized that visible and authentic registration number plates enable security agencies to trace vehicle ownership, monitor suspicious movements and quickly identify vehicles linked to criminal activities.
Police authorities expressed concern that some motorists deliberately cover, alter or conceal their number plates in an attempt to evade security checks, traffic enforcement measures and criminal investigations.
Others, the command said, operate vehicles with forged or unauthorised registration numbers, creating significant challenges for law enforcement officers seeking to track and identify suspects involved in criminal acts.
The police maintained that the ongoing operation is designed to address these concerns and strengthen public safety across all parts of the state.
Under the enforcement campaign, officers have been directed to stop and inspect vehicles suspected of violating registration plate regulations.
Any vehicle found operating with covered, obscured, mutilated or fraudulent number plates may be impounded pending investigation and appropriate legal action.
The command stressed that the operation would be conducted professionally and in accordance with established legal procedures, while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Residents were also urged to cooperate with security personnel during the exercise and ensure that their vehicles comply fully with all registration requirements.
