Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have released 416 women and children abducted from Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, months after they were taken during an attack on the community.
The captives reportedly regained their freedom on June 6, 2026, following negotiations and engagement efforts involving community leaders and other stakeholders.
President of the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA), Samaila Kaigama, who confirmed the development, said the group played a significant role in efforts that led to the release of the captives.
The victims were abducted during an attack on Ngoshe in early March 2026 when insurgents reportedly stormed the community, killed several residents, and took away hundreds of women and children.
Videos previously circulated by insurgents allegedly showed some of the captives while demands and ultimatums were reportedly issued during negotiations.
Although 416 captives have now been released, reports indicate that at least 12 others escaped earlier during captivity.
Security sources say troops under Operation Hadin Kai have continued operations across parts of southern Borno in recent months, conducting rescue missions and intensifying efforts against insurgent groups operating within the region.
Residents and community leaders have welcomed the development but continue to call for stronger security measures to prevent future attacks in the Gwoza axis, which has remained vulnerable to insurgent activities.
Authorities are yet to provide detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding the release or whether any concessions were made. Officials are expected to conduct medical assessments, profiling, and reintegration processes for the released captives.
