The House of Representatives on Wednesday called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take immediate and decisive steps to halt the recurring violence between the Karinjo and Wurkun communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area following another deadly clash that left several people dead, many displaced and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
The appeal came after lawmakers considered a motion presented during plenary by Mohammed Audu, who raised concerns over the worsening security and humanitarian crisis affecting the troubled communities.
Presenting the motion before the House, Audu informed lawmakers that fresh violence erupted between the Karinjo and Wurkun communities on May 29, 2026, resulting in the death of at least five persons and injuries to several others.
According to him, the renewed hostilities also led to the destruction of houses, farmlands, harvested produce and livestock, leaving many residents homeless and worsening economic hardship in the affected communities.
The lawmaker described the latest violence as deeply troubling, warning that the conflict was gradually escalating into a broader security threat capable of destabilising the entire local government area and neighbouring communities.
Audu lamented that the recurring clashes had continued despite previous peace efforts and security interventions aimed at restoring normalcy in the area.
He warned that the violence had aggravated an already fragile security situation in Karim Lamido, where residents are simultaneously battling attacks from armed bandits operating around border communities linking Taraba with Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe states.
According to the lawmaker, the combined effect of communal clashes and banditry has created fear and uncertainty among residents, forcing many families to flee their homes in search of safety.
He told the House that farming and other economic activities had been severely disrupted, thereby threatening food production and livelihoods in the agrarian communities.
“The renewed hostilities have compounded an already precarious security situation in Karim Lamido, where communities are also grappling with attacks by bandits operating around the border areas linking Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe states,” Audu stated.
The lawmaker further expressed concern over the humanitarian implications of the crisis, noting that displaced residents, including women, children and the elderly, were in urgent need of food, shelter, medical assistance and protection.
He appealed to the Federal Government to intensify security operations in the area and ensure that perpetrators of violence were identified and brought to justice.
Audu also called for proactive conflict resolution measures involving traditional rulers, community leaders, religious stakeholders and security agencies to prevent further bloodshed.
Following deliberations on the motion, members of the House expressed serious concern over the recurring nature of communal violence in several parts of the country, particularly in rural communities where disputes over land, boundaries and other local issues often degenerate into deadly confrontations.
Lawmakers warned that if urgent measures were not taken, the situation in Karim Lamido could deteriorate further and create additional humanitarian and security challenges for the region.
The House subsequently urged the Federal Government, the military, police and other security agencies to immediately strengthen security presence in the affected communities and take all necessary actions to restore peace and order.
The lawmakers also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant humanitarian organisations to provide relief materials and assistance to displaced victims affected by the latest violence.
Some members of the House stressed the need for long-term peacebuilding strategies that would address the root causes of communal conflicts in Taraba State and other parts of the country.
They noted that repeated outbreaks of violence had continued to undermine development, destroy investments and deepen poverty in rural communities already facing economic hardship.
Observers say Karim Lamido and surrounding areas have witnessed recurring security challenges over the years, including communal disputes, farmer-herder tensions and attacks by criminal groups operating across interstate borders.
Residents of the affected communities have repeatedly appealed for stronger government intervention, complaining that insecurity has disrupted education, healthcare services and commercial activities.
Community leaders have also warned that prolonged violence could worsen displacement and increase social tensions among neighbouring settlements if not urgently addressed.
Security analysts believe the strategic location of Karim Lamido near multiple state boundaries has made the area vulnerable to criminal activities and difficult for local security operations to effectively contain.
The latest appeal by the House of Representatives is expected to place additional pressure on security agencies and government authorities to implement both immediate and long-term measures aimed at preventing another outbreak of violence.
For many residents affected by the conflict, however, the priority remains the restoration of peace, protection of lives and the safe return of displaced families to their communities.
As tensions continue to simmer in parts of Taraba State, stakeholders are urging dialogue, reconciliation and stronger security collaboration to prevent further loss of lives and property.
