The Lagos State chapter of the Allied People’s Movement has expressed deep concern over what it described as worsening security challenges across the state, warning that the increasing wave of criminal activities could threaten public safety and economic stability if urgent action is not taken.
The party said reports of kidnappings, armed robberies, cult-related violence and other criminal activities had created widespread fear among residents and raised fresh questions about the effectiveness of existing security arrangements in the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Ayodele Kazeem, said the growing anxiety among residents could no longer be ignored, especially as disturbing reports and videos continued to circulate on social media showing alleged criminal incidents in different communities.
Kazeem noted that Lagos occupies a strategic position as Nigeria’s commercial and economic nerve centre, attracting millions of people from across the country and beyond in search of employment, business opportunities and better living conditions. According to him, the state’s importance to the national economy makes security a matter that must be treated with utmost seriousness.
He said the increasing reports of insecurity had left many residents worried about their safety and the ability of law enforcement agencies to effectively combat criminal elements operating within the metropolis.
“Recent reports and videos circulating on social media have further amplified public concerns about the possibility of criminal elements infiltrating communities across the state,” he said.
“While security agencies must continue to investigate and verify such reports, no responsible society can afford to treat security matters with indifference.”
The APM spokesman stressed that although some of the circulating reports might still be under investigation, the growing tension among citizens reflected a broader lack of confidence in the current security situation.
He stated that many Lagos residents now live in fear, particularly in densely populated areas where incidents of street violence, robberies and cult clashes have allegedly become more frequent.
Kazeem called on the Lagos State Government and security agencies to intensify surveillance operations across communities, improve intelligence gathering and strengthen collaboration with local vigilante groups and community leaders.
According to him, proactive policing and community engagement remain critical to preventing criminal activities before they escalate into larger security threats.
The party also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements and activities within their neighbourhoods.
Kazeem maintained that public safety should not be politicised, adding that all stakeholders must work together to ensure Lagos remains safe for businesses, investors and ordinary citizens.
He warned that continued insecurity could negatively affect investor confidence and damage the image of Lagos as a destination for commerce and tourism.
The APM spokesman further appealed to security agencies to respond swiftly to distress calls and improve their visibility in vulnerable communities, especially areas where residents have repeatedly complained about criminal activities.
He added that the rapid population growth in Lagos requires stronger security planning, better-equipped law enforcement agencies and improved welfare for security personnel.
According to the party, the government must also address underlying social and economic issues contributing to crime, including unemployment, poverty and drug abuse among youths.
Kazeem emphasised that tackling insecurity requires a combination of enforcement, prevention and social intervention programmes aimed at reducing the attraction to criminal activities.
The party’s statement comes amid growing public discussions on security in Lagos, with many residents taking to social media to share experiences and concerns over alleged incidents of robbery, kidnapping attempts and violent attacks in some parts of the state.
Despite the concerns raised, the APM urged residents not to panic but to remain alert and continue supporting lawful efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
The party reiterated its commitment to advocating policies and initiatives that promote peace, security and sustainable development across Lagos State.
“As citizens, we all have a responsibility to contribute to the safety and stability of our communities,” Kazeem said.
“Security must remain a collective responsibility involving government, security agencies, community leaders and residents themselves.”
