The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has called on the Federal Government to issue a 90-day ultimatum to the nation’s security chiefs to eliminate terrorists across the country or resign from office.
Adeboye made the strong appeal in a video shared on his official X handle on Tuesday, amid growing concerns over insecurity, kidnappings and violent attacks in different parts of the country.
The revered cleric lamented the worsening security situation and urged authorities to act swiftly and decisively to protect Nigerians from terrorists and criminal elements terrorising communities.
Speaking in the video, Adeboye stressed that those entrusted with the nation’s security must be held accountable for tangible results in the fight against terrorism.
According to him, while citizens and religious leaders may only advise the President as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, urgent action has become necessary due to the scale of insecurity confronting the nation.
“You can only advise the commander-in-chief. You can’t command him, because if you command the commander-in-chief, then you become the commander of the commander-in-chief. That doesn’t make sense,” he said.
The respected preacher added that he had previously made efforts behind the scenes to address the issue, insisting that the time had come for stronger measures.
“But I’ve tried. And God is my witness. I don’t want to take much of your time,” he stated.
Offering what he described as a practical suggestion to the government, Adeboye said security chiefs should be given a clear deadline to end terrorist activities in the country.
“What should we do now? I’m talking to you as my children. If I were asked to make suggestions, I would say quietly to our government, move fast. And tell our security chiefs, get rid of these terrorists within 90 days, or resign,” he declared.
His comments come at a period of heightened national anxiety over insecurity, especially following recent incidents of abductions and attacks in several parts of Nigeria.
Many Nigerians have continued to demand stronger responses from security agencies as cases of kidnappings, banditry and terrorist attacks persist despite repeated assurances from authorities.
Adeboye’s remarks have since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing support for his position and calling for greater accountability from those responsible for the country’s security architecture.
Others argued that the government must overhaul intelligence gathering, improve welfare for security personnel and strengthen collaboration among security agencies to effectively tackle terrorism and violent crimes.
The cleric’s intervention adds to growing calls by prominent Nigerians, traditional rulers, civil society groups and religious leaders urging the Federal Government to adopt more decisive strategies in addressing insecurity and restoring public confidence.
Security has remained one of the major issues dominating national discourse, with citizens increasingly worried about attacks on schools, highways and rural communities across different regions of the country.
Despite ongoing military operations against insurgents and criminal gangs, concerns persist over the ability of security agencies to completely neutralise the threats posed by terrorists and bandits.
Adeboye, who is widely respected across religious and political divides, has repeatedly called for peace, national unity and prayers for Nigeria, while also urging leaders at all levels to prioritise the welfare and safety of citizens.
