The Kano State Ministry of Health has established a special unit to promote health, wellbeing of adolescent girls, and menstrual hygiene management.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, said this on Monday at a media interactive session as part of activities to mark the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
The World Menstrual Hygiene Day, designated by the United Nations, is observed annually on May 28.
The theme for this year is: “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”
Labaran said the day is dedicated to create awareness among women and girls on proper menstrual hygiene practices.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to improve the health of women and children in the state.
The commissioner lamented that many girls experienced stigma, fear and emotional distress during their menstrual periods.
To address the menace, Labaran said the ministry was collaborating with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), school authorities, and other stakeholders, to educate girls on safe and healthy menstrual practices.
