Following reports of a renewed wave of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong warning against any form of reprisal attacks on South African nationals, businesses, or interests within Nigeria.
​The official statement, released by Force Spokesperson DCP Anthony Placid, follows a high-level Joint Intelligence Board Meeting chaired by the National Security Adviser.
The NPF emphasized that taking the law into one’s own hands through violence, intimidation, or property destruction is entirely unlawful. Any attempt to target South African citizens, diplomatic facilities, or businesses (such as MTN, Shoprite, etc.) will be treated as a criminal act and prosecuted accordingly.
The Federal Government is currently engaging with South African authorities through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to peacefully resolve the situation and ensure the safety of Nigerians abroad.
Citizens are strongly advised against sharing unverified, inflammatory, or inciting information on social media. The police warned that spreading false narratives only escalates tension and undermines ongoing diplomatic interventions.
In collaboration with other security agencies, the police have deployed visible security measures across the country to protect lives, property, and strategic national interests.
​The authorities are urging everyone to remain calm and allow the government to handle the situation through the appropriate international and legal frameworks.
