A pro-democracy and non-partisan socio-political organisation, the Igbo Agenda Dialogue, has warned that any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 general elections could plunge Nigeria into a serious political crisis capable of threatening the country’s unity, democratic stability and future.
The group issued the warning in a statement released on Monday titled, “Message to all the presidential candidates for the 2027 presidential election.”

The organisation congratulated presidential candidates that have emerged across different political parties ahead of the 2027 elections, while urging political actors, electoral officials, security agencies and citizens to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the polls.
According to the group, the 2027 presidential election is already shaping up to become one of the most fiercely contested elections in Nigeria’s democratic history, making it imperative for all stakeholders to place national interest above personal ambition and partisan calculations.
The Igbo Agenda Dialogue stressed that Nigeria’s fragile political climate requires leaders and institutions to act with restraint, fairness and patriotism to avoid actions capable of triggering widespread unrest.
The organisation warned that any attempt to undermine the integrity of the electoral process through intimidation, vote manipulation, violence or abuse of state institutions could erode public trust in democracy and create dangerous tensions across the country.
“The 2027 elections must not become a battlefield for desperate politicians seeking power at all costs,” the statement said.
“Nigeria’s unity and democratic future are far more important than the ambitions of any individual or political group. Any attempt to manipulate the process could push the nation into avoidable instability with grave consequences for our collective future.”
The group emphasised that Nigerians are becoming increasingly politically aware and would closely monitor the conduct of political parties, candidates and institutions involved in the electoral process.
It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the election period.
According to the organisation, public confidence in democratic institutions can only be strengthened when elections are conducted in a transparent, free and credible manner.
The group further appealed to politicians to avoid inflammatory comments, ethnic profiling and divisive rhetoric capable of deepening existing fault lines within the country.
It noted that campaigns should focus on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians, including insecurity, unemployment, inflation, poverty, infrastructure and national cohesion.
The organisation lamented that political discourse in Nigeria has often been dominated by personal attacks, propaganda and ethnic sentiments instead of practical solutions to national challenges.
It therefore challenged presidential hopefuls to present clear policy alternatives and development plans that would inspire hope among citizens.
“The Nigerian people deserve campaigns built around ideas, competence and credible solutions rather than hatred, fear and manipulation,” the statement added.
“Our leaders must rise above divisive politics and demonstrate maturity worthy of a nation seeking sustainable development and democratic consolidation.”
The group also appealed to supporters of various political parties to maintain peace and reject violence throughout the election season.
It warned against the spread of misinformation, fake news and inciting content capable of inflaming tensions before and after the polls.
The organisation said social media users, political influencers and media practitioners have a responsibility to promote truthful reporting and national unity during the electioneering period.
It further called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups and youth organisations to actively promote peaceful coexistence and civic education ahead of the elections.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s survival as a democratic nation depends largely on the ability of leaders and citizens to respect the rule of law and the sanctity of the ballot box.
The Igbo Agenda Dialogue also stressed the need for all aggrieved parties to seek legal redress through constitutional means rather than resorting to violence or actions capable of destabilising the country.
The group expressed concern over rising political tension in parts of the country, warning that early signs of desperation among some political actors should not be ignored.
It urged security agencies to remain vigilant and impartial in dealing with politically motivated violence and acts capable of undermining public peace.
Political observers believe the warning by the organisation reflects growing concerns among Nigerians over the conduct of future elections amid the country’s economic and security challenges.
Analysts have repeatedly stressed the importance of credible elections in strengthening democratic institutions and restoring public confidence in governance.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, many Nigerians are expected to closely watch how political parties, candidates and government institutions handle the emerging contest for power.
For the Igbo Agenda Dialogue, the stakes are too high for Nigeria to repeat the mistakes of the past.
The group maintained that only transparent elections, responsible leadership and issue-based campaigns can guarantee peace, stability and democratic progress in Africa’s most populous nation.
